Financial Assistance
The Howard University School of Divinity (HUSD) recognizes that financing your seminary education is a big investment. Federal financial aid is managed by the Howard University Office of Financial Aid (202-806-2820,http://www.howard.edu/financialaid/). The School of Divinity awards merit-based scholarships to a select group of entering and continuing students.
Scholarships for Entering Students
All applicants accepted into the Howard University School of Divinity will be reviewed for scholarship eligibility. A separate application is not required.
Scholarships & Awards for Continuing Students
- Divinity Research Assistant: Being selected as a Divinity Research Assistant is a privilege that HUSD extends to a select group of continuing students who meet the criteria, thus affording them a unique opportunity to enrich their learning experience. Acceptance of the position as a Divinity Research Assistant obligates the student to enter into a mentoring and/or working relationship with the Dean's Office, Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Office of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, a faculty member, or professional staff member designed to enhance academic growth and development in preparation for effective ministry and professional skill development. The Divinity Research Assistant position provides a scholarship applied towards tuition. To qualify for selection as a Divinity Research Assistant, a student must be a full-time HUSD student in either the Master of Divinity or Master of Arts (Religious Studies) program; demonstrate promise for future graduate work; possess a GPA of 3.00 or higher; complete at least one semester of study prior to applying for a Divinity Research Assistant position; and submit the required application materials by the applicable deadline date as announced in the HUSD Update.
- Faculty Honors and Awards: Each spring, the School of Divinity faculty select outstanding students for various honors and awards. Graduating students receive these honors and awards during the May Degree Recognition and Honors Ceremony. Continuing students receive these honors and awards during the fall Opening Convocation.
All Scholarships awarded by the School of Divinity and Divinity Research Assistant stipends are awarded for a maximum of three years (six semesters – fall & spring only) of full-time study for Master of Divinity students and two years (four semesters – fall & spring only) of full-time study for Master of Arts (Religious Studies) and Doctor of Ministry students, and dependent on available funds.
Students are encouraged to pursue funding from external sources, which will reduce loan indebtedness and provided additional resources. Funding may come from churches, denominations, foundations, The Fund for Theological Education, or other organizations. The Office of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs is available to assist with the identification of external scholarship opportunities.
