Howard University School of Divinity 150th Celebration
Sesquicentennial Celebration!
2020 marks 150 years since the founding of the Howard University School of Divinity, the nation’s premier historically Black theological institution (HBTI). Howard University was chartered in 1867 by an act of Congress and in 1870, the academic unit for theological education was established. The school became fully accredited in 1940 by the Association of Theological Schools under the leadership of Dean Benjamin Elijah Mays. HUSD remains one of the oldest fully accredited theological institutions in the United States and is the only HBTI (out of the 6 accredited HBTI’s) connected to a comprehensive category I research institution. Throughout its history, HUSD has gained an enviable reputation for its distinguished faculty and graduates who have made an indelible impact on the nation and the world.
“The Gift of Black Theological Education: History, Legacy & Advocacy” is the theme for the Sesquicentennial Anniversary. We kicked off the year with a special Opening Worship Service on February 27, 2020 at 7pm in Dunbarton Chapel on the Howard University West Campus featuring Bishop Walter Scott Thomas Sr., Senior Pastor, New Psalmist Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD.
We hosted our Sesquicentennial Fireside Chat with Ambassador Andrew Young on Thursday, September 10, 2020 @ 6:00 pm as a Zoom Webinar. Minister, Activist, Former Mayor of Atlanta, GA, US Congressman and Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador Andrew Young joined Dean Yolanda Pierce in a conversation about the importance of Theological Education throughout his illustrious career.
