The Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree program is designed to prepare persons for the ministry of the church as pastors and in related fields, including chaplaincies, Christian education, and staff positions within denominations. The Master of Divinity degree is the basic professional degree for clergy.
Admissions Requirements
To be eligible, individuals must have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university, and a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher.

Degree Requirements
The Master of Divinity degree requires the completion of 81 credit hours classroom work with a C average or better.
The MDiv degree is the basic professional degree for clergy, and requires a minimum of 81 credits allocated across the following areas:
(A)Biblical Studies 12 credits
(B)Historical Studies 6 credits
(C)Theological Studies 6 credits
(D)Ethical and Cultural Studies 9 credits
(E)Ministry Studies 27 credits
(F)Core Studies 9 credits
(G)Electives 12 credits **
TOTAL 81 credits
Students, in consultation with their advisors, may choose electives from any areas of the curriculum. One elective, if approved by the supervising professor, may be the option of a ministry project or option of research and writing that will produce a thesis or major paper.
Caution to Prospective Students
The Board of Trustees of Howard University on September 24, 1983, adopted the following policy statement regarding applications for admission: "Applicants seeking admission to Howard University are required to submit accurate and complete credentials and accurate and complete information requested by the University. Applicants who fail to do so shall be denied admission. Enrolled students who as applicants failed to submit accurate and complete credentials or accurate and complete information on their application for admission shall be subject to dismissal when the same is made known, regardless of classification."
